Why I Rejected Super Eagles Job – Herve Renard

In a stunning revelation that has captivated football fans, French tactician Hervé Renard disclosed that he was on the brink of becoming the head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles. Known for his successful tenures with the Ivory Coast and Zambia, Renard’s potential appointment highlights the intense competition for leadership in one of Africa's most storied football teams.

Following the unexpected exit of Finidi George in May, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) sought to bring in a fresh vision for the Super Eagles. Renard’s name quickly surfaced as a top contender, especially after negotiations with German coach Bruno Labbadia collapsed, leaving the team in a precarious situation.

In an interview with French outlet L’Équipe, Renard revealed that the NFF had made him an enticing offer—the most lucrative he had ever received. Despite the financial allure, Renard ultimately chose to decline, citing personal considerations. “I almost went to Nigeria. I weighed the pros and cons for a few days, even weeks, before eventually turning it down. It was the best offer I’ve had so far, but it didn’t suit me in the end,” he explained.

Meanwhile, interim coach Augustine Eguavoen is stepping up to guide the Super Eagles through the crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Libya. Eguavoen, who has held the head coach position multiple times in the past, has made it clear that any interest in a permanent role would hinge on specific conditions.

“The Super Eagles job isn’t one you take lightly,” Eguavoen stated. “If I were to take it permanently, I’d need to sit down, reflect, and think deeply because it’s not a small task. It’s going to be tough. I’d need a long-term contract, patience, and clauses in the deal because you don’t win every day. It takes time to build a team.”

Eguavoen expressed frustration over his past experiences, lamenting that he was never given adequate time to execute his vision for the team. “In 2006, I was in charge for six months. Every other time, it was just two months or two to three games. Clemens Westerhof had five years. Gernot Rohr had six years. They got time, but I never had two straight years,” he pointed out.

The call for stability echoes a familiar theme in Nigerian football where coaching turnover has often led to inconsistent performances on the pitch. Eguavoen reiterated the need for the NFF to demonstrate confidence in its leadership choices, insisting that long-term assurances and contractual clauses are essential for sustainable success.

As the Super Eagles prepare for their upcoming qualifiers, fans can only wonder what might have been had Renard accepted the position. With Eguavoen at the helm, the team now faces the challenge of forging a new identity one that could lead them back to glory on the continental stage. The road ahead is fraught with challenges, but with the right backing, the Super Eagles may just soar once again.
